Ryu Miyata is a science communicator and sci-fi prototyper based in Tokyo. He leads the science communication team at Araya, Inc. and serves as science communicator for Japan's Moonshot Goal 1 (Kanai Project), where he produces Neu World, a sci-fi × neuroscience project that brings science fiction writers and creators together with researchers to imagine the future. Previously, he spent five years as a science communicator at Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, working across exhibitions, events, and research programs. He calls his methodology "Speculative Science Communication" — using the imaginative power of science fiction so that anyone can rehearse how we will live with technologies that don't yet exist. He is a four-time invited contributor to Bungeishunju's "100 Viewpoints," a nominee for the 56th Seiun Award, and winner of KAGUYA Future 2025. Neu World
Founder / Producer Project · 2023–Neu World is a sci-fi × neuroscience project that brings science fiction writers and creators together with researchers to imagine the future. Its guiding principles are "optimizing psychological distance" and "science fiction that isn't propaganda" — creating a space where citizens can decide for themselves how to engage with emerging technology. It is part of Japan's Cabinet Office Moonshot R&D Program, Goal 1's Kanai Project, "Internet of Brains."
RIDE ON
Producer Creative Work · 2026RIDE ON is an original sci-fi manga by artist SORAKARAKITANODA, produced as part of Neu World. Drawing on Sony CSL researcher Jun Rekimoto's work on human augmentation, it depicts a near future in which a sensory-sharing technology called "Ride" has become part of everyday life. It was published in May 2026.
SF Carnival 2026
Speaker / Booth Exhibitor Event · 2026SF Carnival 2026 was a sci-fi × science event co-hosted by Keio University's Science Fiction Research and Development Center and Moonshot Goal 1's Kanai Project, held April 11–12, 2026 at Daikanyama T-SITE. Miyata spoke at the talk session "We've Started Speculative Science Communication" and oversaw the Neu World and Visionary Lab exhibition booths.
You and Robots
Production Exhibition · 2022You and Robots was a major special exhibition at Miraikan (Mar 18 – Aug 31, 2022) pairing frontline robotics research with the question "What does it mean to be human?" Miyata was part of the production team and facilitated Day 2 of the related talk session on the exhibition's development.
Cinema Miraikan: "Ghost in the Shell"
Planning / Facilitation Talk · 2022Part of Miraikan's film × science dialogue series, Cinema Miraikan. After a screening of Ghost in the Shell (1995), Miyata facilitated a discussion with a cultural anthropologist from Hitotsubashi University on the question "Who do we become through technology?"
