Science Communication
Creating dialogue between science and society
Science communication shares scientific knowledge and the excitement of research while listening to people’s questions, hopes, and concerns. It creates opportunities for researchers, citizens, businesses, and creators to bring their knowledge and experience together and explore how we live with science and technology.
As technology enters everyday life, what it can do matters alongside what people want and care about. I design communication around its purpose and audience, helping people think through their own choices.
Share, listen, and think together
Make research meaningful
Connect research, its possibilities, and its uncertainties to people’s interests and everyday lives. Choose the words, experiences, and formats that suit the purpose, from articles to exhibitions and events.
Connect different perspectives
Bring researchers’ questions into conversation with citizens’ questions and hopes. Explore the language and assumptions behind each perspective to help people understand one another.
Open up possible choices
Imagine everyday life with science and technology and explore different ways of engaging with it. Use differences of opinion as a starting point for considering multiple possibilities.
My practice
My work spans exhibition production and dialogue events at Miraikan, communication for research projects, and creative work using science fiction. Across these formats, I create opportunities for science and society to meet.
Science fiction as one approach
One strand of this work is Speculative Science Communication. Stories grounded in scientific knowledge provide a starting point for considering technologies that are not yet familiar. Through projects such as Neu World, I create opportunities to express hopes and concerns about the future and discuss them together.
