I’m a science communicator. I stand between emerging science and society — translating research, designing spaces for dialogue, and borrowing the imaginative power of science fiction so that we can rehearse, ahead of time, how to live with technologies that don’t yet exist. Since 2017, everything I do has pointed toward one goal: a society where no one feels trapped.
My career didn’t start in science communication. My first job was as an engineer at NTT Facilities, working on energy consulting and power-systems design for telecom infrastructure. In a department where the average age was 55, I set out to replace paper manuals with tablets: I wrote a manual “anyone can use” and walked the floor demonstrating it, tablet in hand. Usage ended up eight times higher than in other departments, and the manuals were rolled out nationwide. My colleagues nicknamed me “the Steve Jobs of Tachikawa.” That was when I learned that making things understandable is a professional skill in its own right — and it’s what led me to science communication.
From October 2017, I spent five years as a science communicator at Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, working across writing, exhibition development, event production, and research projects: the special exhibition “You and Robots,” the real-life escape game “Escape from Human Extinction,” the “Cinema Miraikan” series pairing sci-fi films with researchers, participatory events built on sci-fi prototyping, and RISTEX research programs. Moving back and forth between research, entertainment, and the public, the core of my method took shape: with science fiction, citizens themselves can think ahead about technologies that don’t yet exist.
Since October 2022, I’ve led the science communication team at Araya, Inc., and I serve as science communicator for Moonshot Goal 1’s Kanai Project, “Internet of Brains” — producing Neu World, a sci-fi × neuroscience project. I’m also a visiting researcher at Keio University’s Science Fiction Research and Development Center, a member of RINGS at Nihon University, and a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan. Working across the boundaries of research, industry, and creative practice, I’m building this methodology into a field of its own: Speculative Science Communication.
